About Palatine Hill

The legendary birthplace of Rome, where Romulus founded the city in 753 BC, later home to imperial palaces and the magnificent Farnese Gardens.

The Palatine Hill is the oldest and most storied of Rome's seven hills. According to Roman tradition, Romulus founded the city here on 21 April 753 BC, and archaeologists have confirmed the presence of Iron Age huts dating back to the ninth century BC on the hillside. In the Republic era the Palatine was Rome's most fashionable residential address, Cicero, Augustus, and Mark Antony all lived here.

With the Empire, successive emperors transformed the hill entirely, constructing a series of vast palace complexes, the Domus Tiberiana, Domus Flavia, and Domus Augustana, until the entire hilltop became one immense royal residence. The English word "palace" itself derives from "Palatium," the Latin name of this hill.

The Farnese Gardens, the first botanical gardens in Europe, were laid out over the ruins in the 16th century. Today visitors can explore excavated palace remains, stroll shaded garden terraces, and enjoy the finest panoramic views over the Roman Forum below.

Did you know? The word "palace" in nearly every European language derives from "Palatium", the Latin name for this hill.
