About Vatican City

The world's smallest sovereign state, home of the Pope, enclosing St Peter's Basilica, the Sistine Chapel, and the Vatican Museums within its 44-hectare walls.

Vatican City is the world's smallest independent state, covering just 44 hectares entirely within the city of Rome. It has been the seat of the papacy since 1377, when the popes returned from Avignon. The 1929 Lateran Treaty between the Holy See and Mussolini's Italy established its current sovereign status.

Despite its tiny size, Vatican City holds some of humanity's greatest artistic treasures: St Peter's Basilica, the largest church in Christendom; the Sistine Chapel with Michelangelo's ceiling; and the Vatican Museums, housing one of the world's most important art collections. About 800 people hold Vatican citizenship, all clerics, Swiss Guards, or essential staff, though many more work here daily.

The Swiss Guard, founded in 1506, is the world's oldest active military corps, its colourful uniform traditionally attributed to Michelangelo's design. The Pope's appearances from the basilica balcony and during Sunday Angelus draw thousands of faithful from around the globe.

Did you know? Vatican City has the world's only ATM with Latin as a language option, "Inserito scidulam quaeso ut faciundam cognoscas rationem" means "Insert your card to view your account."
