The upper old town of Paphos, set back from the resort on the ridge, with its covered municipal market, an Ottoman bathhouse, neoclassical lanes, leafy gardens and museums, the everyday Cypriot town above the ancient coast.
Ktima is the upper town of Paphos, the old residential and administrative centre set on the ridge away from the sea, linked to seaside Kato Paphos by Apostolou Pavlou Avenue. Its heart is the municipal market, 'the Agora', selling groceries, lace, pottery and leather. Beside it stands a stone-domed Ottoman bathhouse, a hamam attributed to around 1592, which served the town into the 1950s, near the minaret of the old Grand Mosque in the former Turkish quarter of Moutallos.
The lanes are lined with neoclassical houses of wooden shutters and iron balconies, some restored, some faded. The Municipal Gardens hold an Ionic gateway and a memorial to a Greek national poet, and the quarter has an Ethnographic Museum and the district archaeological museum. Revived around its year as European Capital of Culture in 2017, Ktima is the everyday Cypriot town above the ancient coast.
