About Akamas Peninsula and the Baths of Aphrodite

A wild, roadless peninsula at the northwest tip of Cyprus, protected for its gorges, sea caves, turquoise Blue Lagoon and nesting turtles, with the shaded grotto pool where legend says Aphrodite bathed.

The Akamas is a wild, largely roadless peninsula of about 230 square kilometres at the northwest tip of Cyprus, a protected Natura 2000 wilderness of gorges, sea caves, cliffs and remote beaches, named after a hero of the Trojan War. It is a botanical hotspot, home to dozens of plants found nowhere else, and its beaches, including Lara Bay with its turtle hatchery, are among the island's most important nesting sites for loggerhead and green turtles.

At its gateway lies the Baths of Aphrodite, a small natural grotto pool shaded by an ancient fig tree, where legend says the goddess bathed and met her lover Adonis; swimming is forbidden, but nature trails start here. Out on the coast lie the Blue Lagoon, a shallow bay of brilliant turquoise reached by boat, and the narrow, water-sculpted Avakas Gorge.
