About Coral Bay
The most popular beach near Paphos, a sheltered crescent of pale sand between two headlands with calm, clear, shallow water, and, on the cliff above, the ruins of a Bronze Age settlement of early Greek settlers.
Coral Bay, about eleven kilometres north of Paphos near Peyia, is the most popular beach resort in the area: a crescent of soft pale sand some six hundred metres long, enclosed by two limestone headlands, with shallow, calm, clear water that makes it a favourite with families. It holds a Blue Flag for its water and facilities, and offers sunbeds, watersports and tavernas behind the beach, with sea caves and the Edro III shipwreck along the coast to the north.
On the bay's northern headland lies Maa-Palaeokastro, a fortified Late Bronze Age settlement of around 1200 BC, generally thought to be an early colony of Mycenaean Greeks, cut off by a massive 'Cyclopean' wall across the neck of the promontory. A small museum on the headland shows finds from the site, so the busiest beach near Paphos sits beside one of the first Greek footholds on Cyprus.
