About Es Baluard Museu d'Art Contemporani
Palma's contemporary art museum, opened in 2004 inside the Renaissance Sant Pere bastion, pairs a modern concrete-and-glass building with the old city walls and a rooftop view over the harbour.
Es Baluard Museu d'Art Contemporani de Palma opened on 30 January 2004 inside the Baluard de Sant Pere, part of the Renaissance walls that ringed the city until the early 20th century. The bastion dates from the last quarter of the 16th century, within a scheme by the Italian engineer Giacomo Palearo Fratin. The new building, designed in 2003 by Lluis Garcia-Ruiz, Jaume Garcia-Ruiz, Vicente Tomas and Angel Sanchez Cantalejo, folds about five thousand square metres over three storeys into the old fortifications with ramps, skylights and interior balconies.
The collection holds more than seven hundred works linked to the Balearic Islands and to international art, with names such as Joan Miro, Picasso, Antoni Tapies, Miquel Barcelo, Anselm Kiefer and Marina Abramovic. Inside the bastion survives the Aljub, a vaulted fresh-water cistern finished in the 1640s, now used for events. The rooftop terrace on the walls gives one of the best wide views of the cathedral, the harbour and the bay.
Did you know? Es Baluard is built inside a working piece of Palma's Renaissance ramparts; the museum says the bastion's size and position once made it home to one of the most respected artillery schools in Europe.
