About Gran Hotel (CaixaForum Palma)
The building that brought Modernisme to Mallorca: Domenech i Montaner's lavish 1903 Gran Hotel, with its ceramic-and-ironwork facade, now the CaixaForum Palma cultural centre.
The Gran Hotel on Placa de Weyler is the building that announced Modernisme on Mallorca, designed by the Catalan architect Lluis Domenech i Montaner and opened on 9 February 1903. Its facade is covered with sculpture, floral motifs, glazed polychrome ceramic and wrought iron, and its rounded corner balconies let the two fronts flow into one another. For its day it was a marvel, with central heating, its own electricity plant, a lift and hot water.
The hotel closed in 1941 and the building later passed to a state insurance body, which altered the ground floor. In 1993 it was bought and restored as a cultural centre of the Fundacio la Caixa, and it is now CaixaForum Palma, declared a monument of cultural interest in 2003. Inside is a permanent display of paintings by Hermen Anglada Camarasa, alongside temporary exhibitions, concerts and talks. Beside it survive the Modernisme sign and counter of the former Forn des Teatre bakery.
