About Mercat de l'Olivar

Palma's largest covered food market, opened in 1951 near Placa d'Espanya, with more than a hundred stalls of fish, meat, fruit, cheese and Mallorcan sobrassada under one busy roof.

The Mercat de l'Olivar is the main covered market of Palma, standing on Placa de l'Olivar between Placa d'Espanya and Carrer de Sant Miquel. The present building was inaugurated in 1951, replacing an earlier supply market on the site; its design was drawn up over decades, first sketched in 1914, completed in 1941 and unified into a single hall in 1947. It has two floors over a basement, with a car park for several hundred vehicles, and has been renovated more than once since.

The regional tourism board calls it the largest and most important market on the island, with more than a hundred stalls selling fish and seafood, fruit and vegetables, meat and charcuterie including the island's sobrassada, cheese, olives, bread, spices and flowers. Upstairs are a supermarket, restaurants and a gastronomic space for cooking classes and events, with a mural celebrating farming. The name comes from the olive groves that once grew here; the coffee roaster Cafes Llofriu, founded in 1866, keeps its shop beside the market.

Did you know? The market's design took almost forty years to settle: first sketched in 1914, completed in 1941 and unified into a single hall in 1947, it finally opened in 1951.
