About Royal Palace of La Almudaina
Facing the cathedral on the sea wall, La Almudaina began as an Arab fortress and became the royal palace of the Kings of Majorca; today it is a royal residence run by the Spanish state.
The Royal Palace of La Almudaina stands opposite the cathedral on the seaward edge of the old town. It began as an Arab fortress, known at the 1229 conquest as the Zuda, and was rebuilt as a royal palace by King James II of Majorca in the early 14th century, roughly between 1305 and 1314, modelled on the Kings of Majorca's palace at Perpignan. The works gave it a great hall, the Tinell, and the Chapel of St Anne, and the upper floor was added in the 16th century on the order of Emperor Charles V.
Today the Almudaina is one of the official residences of the Spanish royal family, managed by the state body Patrimonio Nacional and used for ceremonies, though the royals actually lodge at Marivent Palace in summer. The ground floor is dressed in medieval style and the upper floor with furnishings from the 17th to the 19th centuries. After a seven-month restoration the palace reopened on 28 July 2026 with a new route and the Queen's Palace shown to the public for the first time.
Did you know? The name Almudaina comes from the Arabic al-mudayna, meaning the citadel or walled town, a reminder that the palace stands on the stronghold of Muslim Madina Mayurqa.
