About Otranto Harbour & Adriatic Gateway

The magnificent natural harbour of Otranto, Italy's easternmost major port, the traditional gateway between the Italian peninsula and the Balkans, Greece, and the Eastern Mediterranean since ancient times.

Otranto has the most perfectly positioned harbour on the Italian side of the Adriatic, at the narrowest point of the strait between Italy and Albania (about 72 kilometres), it has been the principal crossing point between the Italian peninsula and the Balkans, Greece, and the East since ancient times. The Romans used Otranto (then Hydruntum) as one of their principal Eastern Mediterranean ports; the Crusaders embarked from here for the Holy Land; pilgrims and merchants crossed to Durazzo (Albania) and on to Constantinople, Antioch, and Jerusalem. Today the harbour still serves as a ferry terminus for routes to Albania and Greece, and the view from the harbour across the Adriatic to Albania, visible on clear days, is a reminder of the city's position at the crossroads of two worlds.

Did you know? Otranto is the easternmost city in Italy, and on clear days Albania is visible from its coast with the naked eye, about 72 kilometres away. The Otranto strait is the narrowest point of the Adriatic and has served as the principal crossing between the Italian peninsula and the Balkans since ancient times.
