About Byzantine Underground Churches
The remarkable network of underground Byzantine churches and oratories carved from the living rock beneath Otranto, with surviving frescoes that provide a window into the Eastern Christian culture of the pre-Norman Salento.
Beneath the streets and buildings of Otranto's historic centre, a network of underground Byzantine oratories and churches survives, carved from the soft local limestone by the Greek Christian community that inhabited this city for several centuries before the Norman conquest of 1068. The most important of these is the Crypt of San Nicola di Casole, discovered beneath a 16th-century palace in the centre of the old town. The crypt is carved from the rock, with a ceiling supported by columns, and its walls bear fragmentary Byzantine frescoes, painted in the Eastern Christian tradition, with the characteristic gold backgrounds, hieratic frontal figures, and Greek inscriptions that distinguish Byzantine painting from the Western Christian tradition.
Did you know? The underground Byzantine churches of Otranto were carved from the soft limestone (tufo) by the Byzantine Christian community of the city, a community that spoke Greek and practised Eastern Orthodox Christianity for nearly five centuries before the Norman conquest of 1068.
