The historic centre of Otranto is a compact but extraordinarily complex layering of two and a half thousand years of urban history, Greek colonial foundations, Roman road grid, Byzantine religious architecture, Norman cathedral, Aragonese castle, and baroque palaces all compressed into a small headland overlooking the harbour and the Adriatic. The streets of the old town are narrow and steep, white-washed in the Salentine tradition, and the city walls, partially surviving, partially reconstructed, enclose an area of perhaps two hectares. Despite its small size, Otranto contains architectural monuments of international significance: the mosaic floor of the Cathedral, the Chapel of the Martyrs, and the Aragonese Castle are all among the most important medieval monuments in Italy.
