About Otranto Cathedral & Mosaic Floor
One of the greatest medieval artworks in the world, the extraordinary 12th-century mosaic floor of Otranto Cathedral, covering the entire nave with a cosmic vision of history, mythology, and Christian symbolism.
The mosaic floor of Otranto Cathedral is one of the most extraordinary medieval artworks surviving in Italy, a vast narrative composition covering the entire floor of the Norman cathedral with an encyclopaedic programme of images drawn from Christian history, classical mythology, Arthurian legend, and the allegorical traditions of the medieval imagination. The mosaic was created between 1163 and 1165 by a monk named Pantaleone, and it covers an area of approximately 54 by 18 metres, making it the largest medieval mosaic floor in existence. The central image is a Tree of Life that grows from the base of the composition, its branches supporting a complex visual narrative that encompasses the history of the world from Adam and Eve to the Last Judgment. The technical quality and conceptual ambition of the work are extraordinary for its period and place.
