About Frioul Archipelago

Four limestone islands just off Marseille with white cliffs, turquoise coves, rare wildlife, and the ruins of a 19th-century quarantine hospital, reachable by 25-minute ferry.

The Frioul Archipelago, comprising four limestone islands (Ratonneau, Pomègues, If, and the tiny Tiboulen), lies just 4 kilometres from the Vieux-Port and offers a remarkable escape from the city into a wild Mediterranean landscape. The islands are connected by a dam and can be explored on foot: white limestone cliffs, sheltered turquoise coves, rare flora adapted to the limestone garrigue, and colonies of seabirds including Audouin's gull nest here. The centrepiece of Ratonneau island is the Caroline Hospital, a monumental 19th-century quarantine station built in neo-classical style where ships arriving in Marseille were required to wait in isolation during epidemic periods. Today its ruins stand like a ghost city above the sea, atmospheric and melancholy. The ferry from the Vieux-Port takes 25 minutes.

Did you know? The word "quarantine" derives from the French "quarantaine", the 40-day isolation period practiced at the Caroline Hospital on Frioul, where ships arriving from epidemic zones were required to wait before entering Marseille.
