About Fort Saint-Jean

A 13th-century fortress on the north bank of the Vieux-Port, now dramatically connected to the MuCEM by a footbridge, one of Marseille's oldest surviving military monuments.

Fort Saint-Jean has stood at the entrance of the Vieux-Port since the 13th century, when the Knights Hospitaller of Saint John of Jerusalem, the same crusading military order that later became the Knights of Malta, built their tower on this strategic headland. The tower they built, the Tour du Roi René (Tower of Good King René), still stands. Subsequent centuries brought expansions: a second tower was added in the 16th century, and in the 17th century Louis XIV transformed the whole complex into the northern half of his twin-fortress gateway to Marseille's harbour. When the MuCEM opened in 2013, Fort Saint-Jean was integrated into the museum complex and connected to the MuCEM's J4 building by a spectacular aerial footbridge. Visitors can now walk the fort's ramparts, explore its gardens, and cross the footbridge for panoramic views over the Vieux-Port and the sea.

Did you know? Fort Saint-Jean was originally a commandery of the Knights Hospitaller of Saint John of Jerusalem, the same crusading order that later became the Knights of Malta, who established their Marseille base here in the 13th century.
