About Fort Saint-Nicolas
A 17th-century Vauban fortress on the south side of the Vieux-Port entrance, built by Louis XIV to control the city as much as to defend against enemies.
Fort Saint-Nicolas, sitting on the south bank at the entrance to the Vieux-Port, is one of the two great fortresses that have guarded Marseille's harbour entrance for three and a half centuries. Built between 1660 and 1664 on the orders of Louis XIV, the same king who built Versailles and the ramparts of French cities across the realm, it was designed by the military engineer the Chevalier de Clerville, one of the leading fortification builders of his day. What makes Fort Saint-Nicolas historically interesting is that its cannons were designed to point not outward to sea, to defend against invaders, but inward, across the harbour toward the city of Marseille itself. Louis XIV, who had used military force to subjugate Marseille to royal authority in 1660, built this fort to ensure that Marseille's citizens would never again contemplate rebellion.
