About Château Royal d'Amboise
A royal château high on a spur above the Loire, rebuilt by Charles VIII in Gothic and Renaissance styles, where a chapel is said to hold Leonardo da Vinci's contested remains.
The Château Royal d'Amboise stands on a spur above the Loire, a royal residence favoured by French kings from Louis XI to François I. Charles VIII, raised here, rebuilt it extensively from 1492, first in Flamboyant Gothic and then in Italian Renaissance style, employing craftsmen brought from Italy. It is often described as one of the first places Italian Renaissance design reached France. Charles VIII died at Amboise in 1498 after striking his head on a door lintel.
On the ramparts stands the Flamboyant Gothic Chapel of Saint-Hubert, completed in the 1490s, where Leonardo da Vinci is believed to be buried, though the authenticity of the remains is debated. In 1560 the Amboise conspiracy was crushed with mass executions, and the Peace of Amboise was signed here in 1563. Much of the complex was later demolished; what survives is maintained by the Fondation Saint-Louis.
Did you know? A tomb in the Chapel of Saint-Hubert is said to hold Leonardo da Vinci, but the identification is uncertain: his first burial church was demolished, and bones exhumed in the nineteenth century were reinterred as his.
