About Château de Chenonceau
A Renaissance château that steps across the river Cher on arches, its bridge gallery and twin gardens shaped by women from Diane de Poitiers to Catherine de Medici.
Château de Chenonceau spans the river Cher on a series of arches in the village of Chenonceaux, Indre-et-Loire. The present château was built about 1514 to 1522 on the foundations of an old mill by Thomas Bohier and his wife Katherine Briçonnet, who oversaw much of the work. Diane de Poitiers, mistress of Henri II, was given the château and had an arched bridge built across the Cher to a design by Philibert de l'Orme.
After Henri II died, Catherine de' Medici forced Diane out and added the two-storey gallery along the bridge, dedicated in 1577, so the rooms cross the whole river. The line of women who shaped it earned the traditional nickname Château des Dames. Bought by the Menier family in 1913 and still in their hands, it has been a listed monument since 1840 and keeps two formal gardens.
Did you know? Its traditional nickname, the Château des Dames, honours the women who built and shaped it: Katherine Briçonnet, Diane de Poitiers, Catherine de Medici, Louise of Lorraine and Louise Dupin.
