About Château de Chambord
The largest château in the Loire, begun in 1519 for François I as a hunting retreat, famous for its open double-helix staircase and a roofline like a small town.
Château de Chambord rises from a wooded park in the Loir-et-Cher, the largest of the Loire châteaux. Construction began in 1519 for King François I and continued for decades, still unfinished when he died in 1547. The design, credited to the Italian architect Domenico da Cortona with on-site work overseen by Pierre Nepveu, blends French medieval and defensive forms with Italian Renaissance detail. It stands about 56 metres tall, with roughly 128 metres of façade and more than 800 sculpted columns.
At its heart is an open double-helix staircase, two intertwined flights that climb without ever meeting. Above, a crowded roofscape of towers, cupolas and chimneys surrounds a central lantern tower. François I conceived Chambord as a hunting retreat rather than a home, keeping his main residences at Blois and Amboise. State-owned since 1930, it was inscribed by UNESCO in 1981, within the wider Loire Valley landscape.
Did you know? At the core, an open double-helix staircase carries two separate spirals that never meet. It is sometimes credited to Leonardo da Vinci, then a guest of François I, but that has never been proven.
