About Château Royal de Blois
A royal château in the heart of Blois where four wings ring one courtyard, from medieval fortress to Renaissance staircase, and the Duke of Guise was assassinated in 1588.
The royal Château de Blois stands in the centre of Blois, overlooking the Loire in the Loir-et-Cher. It famously combines wings from four periods around one courtyard: remains of the thirteenth-century fortress, the Flamboyant Gothic wing of Louis XII, the Renaissance wing of François I, and the Classical wing of Gaston d'Orléans, designed by François Mansart and left unfinished. Louis XII was born here in 1462 and made Blois a principal royal residence, building his brick-and-stone wing around 1500.
The François I wing, begun about 1515, carries a monumental open spiral staircase in an octagonal cage, richly carved with bas-reliefs. On 23 December 1588 Henri, Duke of Guise, was assassinated at Blois on the orders of Henri III, and Catherine de' Medici died there in 1589. The château now houses the Musée des Beaux-Arts de Blois, with works from the sixteenth to nineteenth centuries, and is a listed monument within the UNESCO Loire Valley.
Did you know? One courtyard at Blois shows four eras of French architecture: a thirteenth-century fortress, the Flamboyant Gothic Louis XII wing, the Renaissance François I wing, and the Classical Gaston d'Orléans wing left unfinished by François Mansart.
