São Jorge Castle crowns the highest hill in central Lisbon, offering the most commanding panoramic views in the city. Built by the Moors in the 11th century on the foundations of even earlier fortifications, the castle was the site of one of the defining moments in Portuguese history: in 1147, Afonso Henriques, the first King of Portugal, besieged and captured the castle from the Moors with the help of Crusader knights, establishing Lisbon as the heart of the new kingdom. The castle then served as the royal residence for many Portuguese kings until the 16th century, when King Manuel I moved the court to the riverside Ribeira Palace. Today the restored castle walls and towers, the inner courtyard of the Alcáçova, and the archaeological site revealing layers of occupation from the Iron Age through Moorish and medieval times can all be explored. From the towers, the views encompass all seven hills of Lisbon, the wide Tagus estuary, and on clear days the far bank of the Setúbal Peninsula.
