About Belém Tower
A 16th-century Manueline river fortress and UNESCO World Heritage Site from which Portuguese explorers departed to chart the world.
The Belém Tower is one of the most iconic landmarks in Portugal, rising from the north bank of the River Tagus like a stone chess piece. Built between 1514 and 1520 by Francisco de Arruda, it served as a ceremonial gateway to Lisbon and as a defense fortification guarding the river approach to the capital. The tower is a masterpiece of Manueline architecture, its four façades adorned with armillary spheres, the cross of the Order of Christ, twisted rope motifs, and, most remarkably, a carved rhinoceros head on the northwest bastion, one of the first rhinoceros representations in European art. The animal had been a gift to King Manuel I from the Sultan of Gujarat, and it was the talk of Europe. Originally standing almost in the middle of the Tagus, the 1755 earthquake shifted the river's course, leaving the tower much closer to the bank. Together with the Jerónimos Monastery, it was granted UNESCO World Heritage status in 1983.
Did you know? A rhinoceros head carved on the northwest bastion is one of the earliest rhinoceros representations in European art, based on Dürer's woodcut.
