About Tram 28
Lisbon's legendary yellow tram that rattles through the city's steepest hills and most historic neighbourhoods, from Estrela Basilica to Martim Moniz.
The Number 28 tram is Lisbon's most beloved institution, a small, vintage yellow relic of a transport system that once covered the entire city, now reduced to a handful of lines that happen to traverse the most spectacular terrain and historic quarters that Lisbon has to offer. The ancient tram cars, some dating to the 1930s, creak and groan up the impossibly steep hills of Alfama and Graça, squeeze through lanes so narrow that passengers can reach out and touch the walls of houses on both sides, and clatter across the hillsides of Mouraria and Estrela. The route passes Alfama, the Lisbon Cathedral, Largo das Portas do Sol, São Vicente de Fora, the Graça viewpoint, then through Mouraria and Baixa to finish in Estrela near the great basilica. Riding the 28 is more experience than transport: go early in the morning to beat the crowds, and stand on the running board at the back for the best views and the most authentic tram experience.
Did you know? Some of the Tram 28 cars date from the 1930s and have been in continuous service for nearly 90 years on the same steep Lisbon routes.
