About Praça do Comércio
Lisbon's grandest square, opening directly onto the Tagus, dominated by the bronze equestrian statue of King José I and the triumphal Rua Augusta Arch.
Praça do Comércio, Commerce Square, is the great ceremonial entrance to Lisbon, a vast open plaza that connects the city to the Tagus on three sides and is enclosed on the remaining three by elegant 18th-century arcaded buildings painted butter-yellow. The square was built after the 1755 earthquake destroyed the old Ribeira Palace that stood here, the royal residence of the Portuguese court. The Marquis of Pombal, who masterminded Lisbon's reconstruction, designed this as the symbolic heart of the reborn city. At the centre stands the magnificent equestrian statue of King José I, Pombal's patron, cast in bronze by Joaquim Machado de Castro in 1775, one of the finest equestrian statues in Europe. The north side is closed by the triumphal Rua Augusta Arch, completed in 1875, with statues representing Genius, Glory, Valour, and Modesty, and allegorical figures of the Tagus and Douro rivers. From the waterfront, marble steps descend directly into the river, the traditional landing place for kings, ambassadors, and dignitaries arriving by sea.
Did you know? Before the 1755 earthquake, this was the site of the Ribeira Palace, the main royal residence where Vasco da Gama was welcomed home from India.
