About Santa Justa Lift

A spectacular 1902 Neo-Gothic wrought-iron lift connecting the lower Baixa district with the Carmo plateau above, designed by a pupil of Gustave Eiffel.

The Santa Justa Lift, Elevador de Santa Justa, is one of Lisbon's most distinctive landmarks, a 45-metre Neo-Gothic tower of ornate wrought iron rising between the buildings of the Baixa district to connect it with the higher Carmo plateau above. Completed in 1902, it was designed by the engineer Raoul Mesnier du Ponsard, a Portuguese engineer of French descent who had studied under Gustave Eiffel, creator of the famous Paris tower. The Gothic detailing, the arched windows, the filigreed ironwork, the octagonal shaft, reflects the romantic taste of the era, when engineers were producing functional structures with elaborate decorative programmes. Two cars, each holding 29 passengers, carry visitors from street level up to a platform that connects via a bridge to the Convento do Carmo. The open-air viewing platform at the very top provides a remarkable panorama over the Baixa grid, the castle, and the rooftops of Lisbon stretching to the Tagus.

Did you know? The Santa Justa Lift was originally steam-powered when it opened in 1902, converted to electricity just five years later in 1907.
