About Mouraria
Lisbon's Moorish quarter, the neighbourhood where fado was born, now a vibrant multicultural community at the foot of São Jorge Castle.
Mouraria is one of Lisbon's most historically resonant and currently vibrant neighbourhoods, the quarter to which the Moorish population retreated after the Christian reconquest of 1147, giving the neighbourhood its name (Mouraria means "Moors' Quarter"). For centuries it was a marginalised area, associated with poverty, crime, and, in the 19th century, with the emergence of fado music. The legendary Maria Severa, the first great fado singer, lived and died in Mouraria in the 1840s. Today the neighbourhood has undergone remarkable regeneration: it remains one of the most multicultural areas of Lisbon, with large communities from South Asia, China, and West Africa living alongside old Lisboeta families. The central Intendente Square, recently renovated, has become a lively hub of cafés, restaurants, and community life. The neighbourhood is exploring and celebrating its multilayered identity while maintaining the authenticity that makes it one of the most genuinely interesting places to walk in Lisbon.
