About Rossio Square

Lisbon's traditional beating heart, Praça Dom Pedro IV, with its wave-patterned black-and-white cobblestone mosaic, ornate fountains, and the grand National Theatre.

Rossio, officially Praça Dom Pedro IV, has been the social heart of Lisbon for centuries, the gathering place where news was announced, festivals held, executions performed, and the ordinary life of the city played out. The wave-patterned black-and-white cobblestone mosaic, calceteiro art, that covers the entire plaza is one of the most distinctive surfaces in Lisbon and was laid in the 19th century by skilled pavers using millions of small limestone cubes. At the centre rises a tall bronze column topped by a statue of Dom Pedro IV, first emperor of Brazil and briefly king of Portugal. Two ornate cast-iron fountains, cast in France and installed in 1889, flank the column. The north side of the square is dominated by the National Theatre D. Maria II, built in 1846 in neoclassical style, its pediment filled with a row of statues representing theatrical characters. The square has dozens of outdoor café tables and is the traditional starting point for any exploration of Lisbon.
