About Palácio Nacional de Queluz
Portugal's Versailles, an elegant 18th-century Rococo royal palace 15km from Lisbon, with exquisite gardens, tiled canal, and ceremonial state rooms.
The Palácio Nacional de Queluz, often called "Portugal's Versailles", is a magnificent 18th-century Rococo palace set in extensive formal gardens about 15 kilometres northwest of Lisbon, accessible by suburban train. Built for Dom Pedro III, husband of Queen Maria I, between 1747 and 1794, the palace is a masterpiece of the lighter, more graceful Rococo aesthetic that followed the heavier Baroque style of the previous century. The exterior is painted in the distinctive terracotta-pink colour that has become the palace's visual signature. The interiors rival the most lavish courts in Europe: gilded carved wood panels, azulejo tile decorations, painted ceilings, magnificent throne rooms, and intimate private apartments. The gardens are among the finest formal gardens in Portugal, featuring sculpted boxwood hedges, fountains, mythological statuary, and, most unusually, a canal lined on both sides with 18th-century azulejo tile panels depicting maritime scenes. The palace served as Portugal's summer royal residence and hosted major cultural and diplomatic events. The tragic Queen Maria I lived here in her years of madness.
Did you know? When the French invaded Portugal in 1807, the entire royal family fled from Queluz Palace to board ships at Belém and escape to Brazil, taking the royal library and treasury with them.
