About Miradouro da Senhora do Monte
The highest viewpoint in Lisbon, offering an unmatched 360° panorama over all seven hills, the castle, and the Tagus, beloved by locals and best visited at sunset.
The Miradouro da Senhora do Monte is the highest of Lisbon's famous viewpoints, miradouros, and offers the most comprehensive panorama of the city, a near-360-degree view that takes in all seven of Lisbon's famous hills, the São Jorge Castle directly opposite, the Alfama neighbourhood spread below, and the wide silver expanse of the Tagus stretching to the south. Unlike the more touristed São Pedro de Alcântara or Portas do Sol viewpoints, Senhora do Monte retains a genuine local character: this is where Lisboeta families come in the late afternoon to sit, drink a beer from the small kiosk, and watch the sun set over their city. A small 18th-century chapel dedicated to Our Lady of the Mount stands at the edge of the terrace, legend says that a pregnant woman who sits in the stone throne inside will have a safe delivery. The viewpoint is in the Graça neighbourhood, one of the most authentic working-class hilltop districts in Lisbon, and the walk through its streets to reach the viewpoint is itself rewarding.
Did you know? This is the highest viewpoint in Lisbon, higher even than the famous Graça and São Pedro de Alcântara viewpoints, with a near-360° panorama over all seven hills.
