About Windermere
England's largest natural lake, eleven miles of silver water between wooded fells, busy with cruise boats and ferries and the gentle, sociable starting point for any trip to the Lakes.
Windermere is the largest natural lake in England, by length, area and volume. It is about 11 miles (18 km) long and up to 1.5 km wide, with a surface area of around 14.73 km2. A classic ribbon lake, it lies in a glacial valley and filled with meltwater after the last ice sheet retreated. Its main resort is Bowness, with the town of Windermere above it and Ambleside at the lake's head; cruise boats and a car ferry work the water.
The lake became a major tourist destination after the Kendal and Windermere Railway reached its shore in 1847, bringing Victorian visitors and the grand lakeside villas that still line it. It lies within the Lake District National Park, designated on 9 May 1951, the largest national park in England and Wales, and part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site inscribed in 2017.
