About Ambleside

A bustling walkers' town at the head of Windermere, famous for Bridge House, a tiny cottage perched on a single arch over a beck, with a Roman fort nearby.

Ambleside is a town at the head of Windermere, a gateway to the central Lake District fells. Its best-known feature is Bridge House, a tiny late-17th or early-18th-century building standing on a single arch over Stock Beck. It was built as a summer house and apple store for Ambleside Hall, bought by local people in 1926 and given to the National Trust, which uses it as an information point. It is a Grade I listed building.

At Waterhead, on the lake shore, are the remains of the Roman fort of Galava, founded around AD 79 to guard the mountain roads. Ambleside was granted a market charter in 1650 and grew on wool and water-powered mills; today it thrives on walkers and visitors, with paths into the fells and Windermere cruises calling nearby. Its population was about 2,586 in 2022.

Did you know? Bridge House is built right across Stock Beck on a single arch, so the water runs beneath its one small room. A favourite story says it was put there to avoid land tax, but that is only a tale.
