About Hawkshead

A car-free storybook village of whitewashed cottages and cobbled lanes between Windermere and Coniston, where Wordsworth went to school and a gallery shows Beatrix Potter's original illustrations.

Hawkshead is a small, exceptionally pretty village between Windermere and Coniston, within the Lake District National Park, with a population of about 519. Its historic core is car-free, a preserved huddle of whitewashed cottages, cobbled lanes, archways and little squares. William Wordsworth was educated at Hawkshead Grammar School, founded in 1585 by Edwin Sandys, Archbishop of York, boarding in the village as a boy.

The Beatrix Potter Gallery, run by the National Trust, occupies the former law office of her husband, the solicitor William Heelis, and displays her original book illustrations; Potter farmed nearby, having bought Hill Top in 1905, and married Heelis in 1913. The parish church of St Michael and All Angels was first built around 1300 and rebuilt in the 16th century.

Did you know? William Wordsworth went to school at Hawkshead Grammar School, founded in 1585, boarding in the village as a boy. The old schoolroom still shows a desk said to carry his carved name.
