About Grasmere

Wordsworth's beloved village in a green bowl of fells by a small lake: the poets' graves at St Oswald's, the famous gingerbread shop, and some of the loveliest walking in the Lakes.

Grasmere is a village in the central Lake District, on the River Rothay just north of the small lake of the same name, famous above all for its association with William Wordsworth. The poet lived in and around Grasmere for some fourteen years, first at Dove Cottage from 1799 and later at other houses nearby, and called it 'the loveliest spot that man hath ever found'. He is buried with his wife Mary and sister Dorothy in the churchyard of St Oswald's Church.

Beside the church stands Church Cottage, built in 1630 as the village school, now home to Sarah Nelson's Grasmere Gingerbread, a spicy speciality invented in the village in 1854 by Sarah Nelson. The village lies in a bowl of fells by its reed-fringed lake, within the Lake District National Park and the UNESCO World Heritage landscape inscribed in 2017.

Did you know? Wordsworth called Grasmere 'the loveliest spot that man hath ever found'. He and his wife and sister lie buried in St Oswald's churchyard, among the most visited literary graves in England.
