About Ponta da Piedade
The most dramatic coastal landscape in the Algarve, a headland of golden limestone sea stacks, arches, grottos, and caves 2 km south of Lagos, voted the most photographed spot in southern Portugal.
Ponta da Piedade, the Point of Piety, is the most spectacular coastal formation in the Algarve and one of the most dramatic seascapes in all of Portugal. Located approximately 2 kilometres south of Lagos town centre, the headland consists of towering golden-orange limestone sea stacks, natural arches, sea caves (some accessible by boat or kayak), and grottos carved by millennia of Atlantic wave action. The rock formations glow with extraordinary warmth in the late afternoon light, when the orange and ochre hues of the limestone are intensified by the setting sun. The lighthouse at the tip of the headland provides sweeping views along the Algarve coast in both directions. The sea caves and grottos beneath the headland are accessible by boat and kayak tours departing from Lagos harbour, and are among the most popular tourist activities in the western Algarve.
Did you know? The limestone at Ponta da Piedade is approximately 150 million years old, formed during the Jurassic period when this part of southern Portugal lay beneath a shallow tropical sea, and is packed with the fossilised shells of ancient marine organisms, making every visit a geological journey back in time.
