About Forte da Ponta da Bandeira

A perfectly preserved 17th-century sea fort guarding the entrance to Lagos harbour, with a working drawbridge, a small chapel, and a small museum on the Age of Discovery, the departure point for Lagos boat tours.

The Forte da Ponta da Bandeira, the Fort of Flag Point, is the most picturesque of the several fortifications built to defend Lagos in the 17th century. The fort occupies a rocky promontory at the entrance to Lagos harbour and is accessed by a short wooden drawbridge over the water. Built between 1679 and 1690 during the reign of King Pedro II, it is a compact bastion fort in the Italian trace style characteristic of 17th-century military engineering, with angled bastions designed to deflect cannon fire. The interior contains a small chapel dedicated to Santa Bárbara (patron saint of artillerymen), a small museum on the Age of Discovery and the Lagos connection to Henry the Navigator, and the original artillery positions on the ramparts. The fort exterior and its waterfront setting provide some of the best photographic angles on the Lagos waterfront, and the Ponta da Piedade boat tours depart from the adjacent quay.

Did you know? The Forte da Ponta da Bandeira still has its original wooden drawbridge, one of very few functioning historic drawbridges in Portugal, and visitors cross it to enter the fort exactly as soldiers and garrison staff would have done in the 17th century.
