About Lagos Historic Walls & Arco de São Gonçalo
The Moorish and medieval defensive walls that still encircle the old town of Lagos, with the elegant 17th-century Arco de São Gonçalo gateway, the historic fortifications that once protected Henry the Navigator's base of Atlantic exploration.
Lagos retains substantial sections of its historic defensive walls, which trace a complex history through Moorish, medieval, and post-Reconquista periods. The original fortifications were built during the Moorish period (8th-13th centuries) when Lagos, then called Zawaia by the Moors, was an important coastal trading town. These walls were strengthened and extended during the medieval Portuguese period, particularly in the 15th century when Lagos became the principal base for Henry the Navigator's voyages of exploration along the African coast. The most picturesque surviving gateway is the Arco de São Gonçalo, a 17th-century baroque archway in the waterfront wall. Sections of the medieval town wall are visible throughout the historic centre, sometimes incorporated into later buildings, sometimes standing independently, creating a palimpsest of the city's long defensive history.
Did you know? The settlement was Lacobriga to the Romans and Zawaia to its later Moorish inhabitants, and sections of the Moorish defensive walls are still visible in the lower courses of the medieval fortifications, making the Lagos walls a palimpsest of more than a thousand years of successive fortification.
