About Plaza Bib-Rambla

The historic heart of central Granada, a broad flower-filled plaza surrounded by café terraces, just off the Cathedral, where the city's public life has centred for over 500 years on the site of the original Moorish market.

Plaza Bib-Rambla is the central public square of Granada, located immediately south of the Cathedral. The name derives from the Arabic Bab al-Ramla, Gate of the Sand, referring to a gate in the Islamic city walls that once stood here. The square has been the centre of Granada's public life for centuries: it was the location of the main public market of Islamic Granada, and after the Christian reconquest it became the site of public festivals, markets, religious processions, and auto-da-fés during the Inquisition. Today the plaza is a pleasant outdoor café space, with flower stalls in the centre and café terraces around the perimeter. The centrepiece is a 16th-century fountain with a giant's head, known locally as the Giants' Fountain.

Did you know? In 1499, just seven years after the reconquest, Cardinal Cisneros ordered the burning of Arabic books and manuscripts in Plaza Bib-Rambla, contemporary sources put the number destroyed at several thousand volumes (at least 5,000), representing an enormous proportion of the written heritage of Islamic Granada.
