About Paseo de los Tristes

A broad plaza at the bend of the Darro River, backed by the cliffs of the Alhambra hill, where funeral processions once gathered, now Granada's most atmospheric outdoor café terrace facing directly up to the red palace walls above.

The Paseo de los Tristes, the Promenade of the Sad, takes its melancholy name from the funeral processions that once gathered here before ascending to the cemetery on the Alhambra hill. Today it is anything but sad: a broad sunny plaza at the point where the Darro River turns and the Alhambra cliffs rise directly above, it is one of the most atmospheric outdoor café spaces in Granada, with the red walls and towers of the Alhambra looming overhead as you drink your morning coffee. The plaza is backed by the dramatic vertical cliff face of the Alhambra hill, and the combination of the river below, the old buildings on either side, and the palace above creates one of the most dramatic natural theatre settings in the city.

Did you know? The Alhambra cliffs above the Paseo de los Tristes rise almost 60 metres from the riverbank to the base of the palace walls, making this one of the most dramatic viewpoints in the city where you can look almost directly upwards to see the fortress above.
