About Royal Chapel of Granada

The funerary chapel of Ferdinand and Isabella, founders of unified Spain, a Gothic masterpiece attached to Granada Cathedral containing the tombs, royal regalia, and personal art collection of the Catholic Monarchs.

The Royal Chapel is one of the most historically charged buildings in Spain: it is the burial place of Ferdinand and Isabella, the Catholic Monarchs who united Spain, commissioned Columbus's voyage to the Americas, and ended 800 years of Islamic rule in Iberia. The chapel was begun in 1505, the year after Isabella's death, as a Gothic structure attached to the cathedral. The interior contains four magnificent carved marble tomb monuments, the elaborate carved altarpiece depicting scenes from the conquest of Granada and the baptism of the Moors, and in the sacristy, an extraordinary collection of royal possessions including Isabella's actual crown and sceptre, Ferdinand's sword, and paintings from Isabella's personal collection including works by Botticelli, Memling, and Rogier van der Weyden.

Did you know? Isabella's crown, preserved in the Royal Chapel sacristy, is one of the only medieval royal crowns in Europe that can be directly authenticated as belonging to a specific monarch, most royal crowns in European collections are ceremonial reproductions made centuries after their supposed originals.
