About Palace of Charles V
A monumental Renaissance palace built inside the Alhambra complex by the Holy Roman Emperor Charles V, notable for its unique circular courtyard, one of the most original architectural ideas of the Spanish Renaissance.
The Palace of Charles V is the only major Renaissance building within the Alhambra complex, built by the Holy Roman Emperor and King of Spain Charles V after his visit to Granada in 1526. The palace was designed by Pedro Machuca, who had studied in Italy under Michelangelo's influence, and represents the purest example of Italianate Renaissance architecture in Spain. The building is square on the outside but contains a perfectly circular courtyard inside, one of the most original architectural spaces in Spain, with two tiers of columns in the Doric and Ionic orders. Despite its proximity to the Nasrid Palaces, the palace was never completed and Charles V never used it. It now houses two museums: the Museo de la Alhambra and the Museo de Bellas Artes de Granada.
Did you know? The Palace of Charles V took over 300 years to complete, begun in 1527, construction stalled after the Morisco revolt of 1568, and the building was not finished until the 20th century, when it was finally given a permanent roof in 1957.
