About Silla del Moro
A ruined Nasrid watchtower on the hill above the Generalife, an uphill hike rewarded with the finest panoramic view of the entire Alhambra, city, and Sierra Nevada, away from the main tourist crowds.
The Silla del Moro, the Moor's Chair, is a ruined Nasrid watchtower on the hill above the Generalife, accessible via a steep footpath through the Alhambra forest. The tower was built in the 13th century to provide an overview of the surrounding landscape and signal communications with the Alhambra below. The summit, at approximately 830 metres above sea level, offers what many consider the finest panoramic view of the Alhambra, looking down on the entire palace complex from above. The hike takes about 30-40 minutes from the Generalife entrance and requires solid footwear. The area is quieter and less visited than the main Alhambra complex, and the combination of the historical site and the natural forest landscape makes it an excellent alternative to the crowded main palace.
Did you know? The Silla del Moro is mentioned in a famous poem by the 19th-century Spanish Romantic poet Ángel de Saavedra (Duke of Rivas), who imagined Boabdil sitting at the summit and looking down at the lost Granada, contributing to the romantic mythology of the 'last sigh of the Moor' that shaped European views of Islamic Spain.
