About Generalife Gardens

The summer palace and gardens of the Nasrid sultans, terraced gardens of roses and cypress trees, fountains and water channels, overlooking the Alhambra and the city of Granada below.

The Generalife is the summer palace and gardens of the Nasrid sultans of Granada, set on the slope above and to the east of the Alhambra. The name comes from the Arabic Jannat al-Arif, Garden of the Architect, and the gardens represent one of the finest surviving examples of medieval Islamic garden design. The gardens are organised on terraces around the Patio de la Acequia, the Court of the Water Channel, a long rectangular pool flanked by flower beds, fountains, and arched pavilions that is one of the most beautiful garden spaces in Spain. Cypress trees, rose bushes, climbing plants, and the sound of water create an atmosphere of extraordinary tranquillity. The Generalife offers the finest views of the Alhambra as a whole, and in summer evenings is the setting for the International Festival of Music and Dance.

Did you know? The Generalife has the oldest surviving surviving irrigation system in Western Europe, parts of its water channel infrastructure date to the 13th century and are still in continuous operation.
