About Granada Cathedral

A magnificent Renaissance cathedral begun in 1523 on the site of the Great Mosque of Granada, with one of the finest Renaissance interiors in Spain and the attached Royal Chapel housing the tombs of Ferdinand and Isabella.

Granada Cathedral is one of the most important Renaissance buildings in Spain, begun in 1523 under the direction of Enrique de Egas and subsequently completed by Diego de Siloé, who transformed the original Gothic design into the Renaissance masterpiece that exists today. The cathedral was built on the site of the main mosque of Islamic Granada, which was first converted into a church and then demolished to make way for the new building. The interior is extraordinary: an enormous cylindrical nave and ambulatory bathed in light from the high windows, creating one of the most luminous religious interiors in Spain. Attached to the cathedral is the Royal Chapel, a separate Gothic structure containing the remarkable tomb monuments of the Catholic Monarchs, Ferdinand and Isabella, along with their daughter Joanna the Mad and her husband Philip the Fair.

Did you know? The Royal Chapel attached to the cathedral contains the actual crown of Queen Isabella and the sword of King Ferdinand, still preserved after five centuries, some of the most historically significant royal regalia in existence.
