About Albaicín

The ancient Moorish quarter of Granada, a hillside labyrinth of white-walled houses, carmenes (walled gardens), and narrow cobbled lanes facing the Alhambra across the Darro valley.

The Albaicín is the oldest surviving quarter of Granada, a UNESCO World Heritage Site in its own right that preserves the irregular street pattern, traditional architecture, and characteristic cármenes (walled gardens with a house and garden) of Islamic Granada. The neighbourhood occupies a hill directly facing the Alhambra across the narrow Darro valley, and its upper terraces, especially the famous Mirador de San Nicolás, offer the most celebrated views of the Alhambra. The Albaicín was the first part of Granada to be settled after the Muslim conquest in 711 and was the main residential area for the Muslim population of the city until the Christian reconquest in 1492. After the reconquest, the neighbourhood gradually declined but retained its physical character, which is why it survives today as one of the finest preserved examples of a medieval Islamic urban landscape in Europe.

Did you know? The Albaicín is a UNESCO World Heritage Site in its own right, separate from the Alhambra listing, recognised for its extraordinary preservation of the urban fabric of medieval Islamic Granada.
