About Alhambra Forest
The ancient woodland surrounding the Alhambra palace, planted by the Nasrid sultans using a mountain irrigation system, now a cool green refuge of elms, poplars, and oaks offering peaceful walks with Alhambra views.
The Alhambra Forest, the Bosque de la Alhambra, is the ancient woodland that covers the hill on which the Alhambra stands, surrounding the palace complex on three sides. The forest was deliberately planted and maintained by the Nasrid sultans using an elaborate irrigation system fed from the Sierra Nevada, and contains a mix of elm, poplar, oak, and other trees that are several centuries old. The forest provides the shaded, cool approach to the Alhambra that was part of the original design intention: arriving through a canopy of trees heightens the contrast with the open, sunlit palace courts. Today the forest paths provide pleasant walking with views of the palace walls above, and are used by joggers, families, and visitors who want to experience the hill's landscape beyond the palace complex itself.
Did you know? The Acequia Real, the Royal Irrigation Channel, that supplies water to the Alhambra Forest and palace was originally built in the 13th century and is still in operation: it is one of the oldest continuously functioning irrigation systems in Western Europe.
