Gallipoli has one of the most active fishing fleets in Puglia, and the daily landing of the catch in the harbour beside the old town bridge is one of the most authentic and atmospheric experiences the city offers. The Peschiera, the ancient fish market, is a covered market building dating from the 17th century that operates directly beside the harbour. Every morning, the boats that went out the previous night return with their catch of Ionian Sea fish: octopus, cuttlefish, sea bream, sea bass, red mullet, sea urchins, and a variety of other species. The fish are sold directly from the boats and from the market stalls, by weight, at prices that are a fraction of what you would pay in a restaurant. The market is accompanied by a spectacle of noise, colour, and the strong smell of fresh salt sea.
