About Castello Angioino

The imposing coastal castle guarding the bridge to Gallipoli's island, one of the finest examples of medieval coastal fortification in southern Italy, with circular towers and sea-level access to the Ionian waters.

The Castello Angioino of Gallipoli guards the bridge that connects the island old town to the mainland, it is the first monument that most visitors encounter and one of the most dramatically positioned fortifications in Puglia. The castle has medieval origins reaching back to the Byzantine period, and was rebuilt and substantially expanded under the Angevin and Aragonese rulers of the Kingdom of Naples in the 13th to 16th centuries; the great eastern bastion known as the Rivellino was added in the early 16th century. The current form features circular towers at the corners of a quadrangular plan, a reflection of artillery-age military architecture, with walls of considerable thickness designed to resist cannon fire. The castle is well maintained and can be visited, with displays of medieval weaponry, architecture models, and explanations of the fortification's military history.

Did you know? The Castello Angioino was besieged multiple times over its history, most famously by a Venetian fleet in 1484, when the city was bombarded from the sea and the Venetian admiral Giacomo Marcello was killed by a cannon shot fired from one of the bastions before Venice took the town.
