About Cathedral of Sant'Agata

Gallipoli's magnificent baroque cathedral, a treasury of painting and sculpture built during the city's most prosperous commercial period, containing remarkable works by the finest Neapolitan and Salentine artists of the 17th century.

The Cathedral of Sant'Agata in Gallipoli is one of the finest baroque churches in the Salento, a building of exceptional interior richness that reflects the extraordinary commercial prosperity of Gallipoli during the 17th and early 18th centuries, when the city's olive oil trade made it one of the wealthiest ports in the Kingdom of Naples. Built between 1629 and 1696, the cathedral has a facade in the mature Leccese baroque style, with carved stone decoration of the characteristic warmth and exuberance, and an interior that is among the richest in all of southern Italy. The side chapels contain paintings commissioned from the leading Neapolitan and Roman artists of the period, and the overall quality of the artistic programme is exceptional for a city of Gallipoli's modest size.

Did you know? The Cathedral of Gallipoli contains paintings by Luca Giordano, who was so prolific and fast in his painting that contemporaries called him 'Luca fa presto', Luke does it quickly. He is estimated to have produced over 3,000 paintings in his lifetime.
