Its strategic position on the Ionian coast made it the site of numerous naval battles and sieges, and the massive Angevin castle at its northernmost point is one of the most impressive coastal fortifications in Puglia. The narrow streets of the old town, the sea visible at every turn, and the superb baroque cathedral make Gallipoli one of the most rewarding small cities in the Salento.
