About Parque de Santa Catarina

A hillside park above Funchal's marina, with lawns, ponds and sweeping bay views, around the little Capela de Santa Catarina, said to stand where one of Madeira's first chapels was built.

Parque de Santa Catarina is one of Funchal's largest parks, laid out across a green hillside above the marina and the bay. Covering about three and a half hectares, it was created on the site of a former municipal cemetery and finished in 1966, to a design by the architect Miguel Jacobetty Rosa. Its lawns, flowerbeds, ponds and terraces, planted with subtropical trees and dotted with sculptures, make it a favourite spot for a stroll with a view over the harbour and the cruise pier.

In the lower part of the park stands the small Capela de Santa Catarina. Tradition holds that Constança Rodrigues, wife of the discoverer João Gonçalves Zarco, had a wooden chapel built here in 1425, making it one of the very first chapels on the island; the date 1425 is carved on the portal. The chapel standing today was rebuilt in stone in the 1600s, with a porch on red stone columns, a bell-gable and an early-16th-century holy-water font.
